How to Vote Safely in 2020

On October 5, the counties will begin mailing the vote-by mail ballots.  The last day to register to vote is October 19th. So make sure you’re registered and watch for your ballot!

With all the differing opinions going around about how to cast your vote this year, we wanted to provide some information to help you decide whether to vote by mail or in person. We are including tips on making sure that your vote is counted.

    By Mail
You can mail your voting ballot in postage free but mail it early.  Your signature must match the signature you used to register to vote (most likely your driver’s license signature).

By Drop Box for Kern County Residents
Local Drop Box: Kern County Elections will have secure drive through drop boxes in the Frazier Park Library parking lot on Saturday October 17, 24 and 31 from 10 am to 3pm.
Bakersfield Drop Box: Kern County Election Headquarters is located at 1115 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield.  They will be open to receive your ballot every weekday from October 5 to November 3.
By Drop Box for Ventura County Residents
Ventura County (Lockwood Valley) residents can take ballots to any of the 34 drop boxes in the County.  There do not appear to be any locally; the closest is in Fillmore at 250 Central Avenue.  The other locations can be found here: https://recorder.countyofventura.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Drop-Box-Locations-1.pdf
By Drop Box for Los Angeles County Residents
Los Angeles County (Gorman, Neenach, etc.) can take ballots to a drop box.  Again, there do not appear to be any local drops.  The closest is Lake Hughes.  You can find a map of locations here: https://locator.lavote.net/locations/vbm?id=4193&culture=en&add=Gorman,%20CA
There may be a drop box in Neenach at least one day coming up, the date has not been announced yet.
Having a Friend Deliver Your Ballot
If you are not able to leave your home, you can sign your ballot over to a trusted friend who can deliver it to either a drop box, Election HQ, or directly to a polling place on November 3.  It requires the signature and relationship of the person you are trusting your ballot to in the upper right hand corner of the return envelope.   You can still track your ballot to make sure it was delivered.  Ballots dropped off on Election Day November 3, 2020 will be counted after midnight.
In all cases, make sure the return envelope is filled out correctly (follow the directions!) or your ballot will be rejected.
    Tracking Your Ballot
Whether you have voted by mail, drop box, or had a friend deliver it, you can track your ballot at wheresmyballot.com to make sure it has arrived and will be counted on Election Day November 3, 2020.

    Voting In Person
Election Day is November 3 and polls will be open from 7 am to 8 pm.  Locate your polling place here: https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place/

    In Conclusion
Only registered voters should receive a ballot in the mail.  If you mail in or drop off your ballot in advance of Election Day, your name will not appear on the Election Day Voter Registration at your polling place.  If you are not on the registration list, and did not mail a ballot, you can challenge that and vote with a provisional ballot.  Provisional ballots are the last to be counted and they are scrutinized to be sure that the voter has not cast a ballot already.

The official voter information guide can be found online at https://voterguide.sos.ca.gov/, and it is available in several languages..

The most important thing you do as a citizen of the USA is VOTE.  Don’t give up your right to choose your government!
